VA Burial Benefits

How it Works

How VA Burial Benefits Work

Find out how to get Veterans Burial Allowances (often refered to as "Veterans death benefits") to help cover burial, funeral, and transportation costs

Determine Eligibility

You may be eligible if you're paying the funeral costs and you won't be reimbursed by any other organization. Additionally you may not have received a dishonorable discharge.

Determine What Benefits You Get

If it's determined you're eligible you may receive the VA burial allowance for burial and funeral costs, VA plot allowance for the gravesite (if not using a national cemetery), or transportation reimbursement.

Prepare Documentation

Ensure your family has all of the paperwork necessary to apply. They will need a copy of your DD214, death certificate, any documents or receipts for the costs incurred, and a statement of account (from the funeral director / cemetery owner)

Apply For Coverage

Your family must file a claim for a non-service connected burial allowance within 2 years after your passing. There is no time limit to file for a service-connected burial allowance.

Receive the Reimbursement

Funds will be distributed to your surviving family dependent on the processing of claims at the time. There is no guarantee the funds will be provided in a timely fashion so be sure your family is prepared.

How much will my family get

As of 2023 the current allowances are as follows:

If the Veteran died as a result of a service-connected condition the max allowance is $2,000. If utilizing a national cemetery your family may be reimbursed for some or all of the transportation costs. (Casket is NOT covered)

If the Veteran died as a result of a NON service-connected condition the max allowance is $893 for burial and $893 for the plot (if not using a national cemetery).

Headstone or marker allowance is provided if NOT utilizing a national cemetery. This allowance is currently $231.

What About a National Cemetery?

Veterans, service members, and some family members may be eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery. Any veteran who DIDN'T receive a dishonorable discharge is eligible. In addition any surviving spouse or MINOR children may utilize a national cemetery.

The gravesite, headstone, opening and closing, and grave liner are all covered at no cost. Your family will still be responsible for your body preparation, body transportation, casket/urn, and any funeral proceedings. The use of a national cemetery at no cost, does not mean your funeral is paid for.
